Funny Stuff

Rats logoWow, a blog. I feel so modern! But what to do; what to say!? I suppose I might as well take this opportunity to mention the fact that while I may be a writer for Solano Magazine, I’m also REALLY funny! Or so I tell myself. [He tells us this at the office, too.–Ed.] I’m in an improv/sketch comedy troupe known as the Rats in the Alley(.com). I’ve been with them for about a year, though they’ve been regularly performing for about 5. If you haven’t been to one of our shows there’s no excuse, because most of them are free! EVERY Tuesday night we put on free shows at Uncle Bong’s Pizzeria in Suisun City (203 Main St., (707) 438-7542). We’ve developed a nice little following. While there is NO guarantee that you’ll laugh at our shows, I can safely say that most people do. I can ALSO safely say that the pizza at Uncle Bong’s really is amazing. As such a mainstream product these days, generally, pizza is pizza. But, somehow, Uncle Bong’s really stands out as being one of the best around. If you don’t believe me… that’s right, go there! And hey, what ELSE are you gonna do on a Tuesday night!?

Comedy at the Cantina

So you’ve been to a Rats show, still not satisfied? Well I’m starting up a little stand-up comedy show in Vallejo as well, the first of which will be this Saturday, February 28th, 2009. Depending upon its awesome success, it may be the first of many. There’s plenty I can say, OR you can just go to the website and read all about it! Or… just look at the flier…

Let’s see… what else? Hmm… I went to a crab feed last Friday! It was for Draeger Construction in Oakland/Emeryville. 350 people were there and it was actually a lot of fun. To be honest, I didn’t expect it to be, since my friend Derrick Karimian and I were the only ones wearing big foam crab suits (they hired us to do this as improv-ers). From the waist up I was all red, my arms came out to two big crab claws that fit like oversized mittens, the crab head came up over my own with two big bug eyes sticking out on either side, and my face popped out right through the mouth. How embarrassing. And to top it all off, each of the suits had a built in crown and cape, insinuating we were not just crabs—but KING crabs! I must say we ended up having a lot of fun with our crab puns (for example, crab walking over to the bar and ordering a pint of salt water) and after the feast (my poor friends and relatives!) we were the life of the party on the dance floor. I had no expectations of such a fun and exciting night. But I Crab cartoonguess wearing a big red crab suit just relieved any self-conscious inhibitions I may have had and replaced them with outgoing charismatic crabby charm. So I guess the moral of the story is: if you want to have fun at a party, wear a funny outfit and give yourself something to talk about, though it helps if you’re getting paid to do it.
